Gong Xi Fa Cai!
So how did I spend CNY in Melbourne? First I met up with SY for KFC lunch on Chapel St, then we took a tram down to Fed Square to do a spot of GeoCaching. We found a cache listed on that site located in the city, and though we don't have GPSes, we figured we look up the coordinates on a map and tried our luck anyway. The site was the Federation Bells in Birrarung Marr (the park beside Fed Sq.) and surprisingly none of us have even heard of that installation before, after being in Melbourne this long. Anyway, we spent half an hour looking under stairs, climbing up the landscaped gardens and peering between the steps but couldn't find the cache and left empty-handed.
Next I had to find a public phone so I could call back to Ipoh to send my CNY wishes to my family, so into Federation Square we went. I made my call (and was very surprised to hear Tristan's voice has cracked. For a moment or two, I thought i was talking to Colin). That done, we browsed the ACMI gift shop which had some interesting stuff, and also checked out the Transfigure exhibition that's currently on at ACMI.
Next was a quick stop of Officeworks to make some photocopies of my résumé cos their rates are among one of the cheapest in town. Then it was off to Crown casino to claim my Chinese New Year $20 voucher and $5 Birthday present from them. Played some Pokies and was out of there. Being a weekday, CNY celebrations aren't in full swing yet. Crown had a huge dragon out in the main atrium though. I'm guessing most of the festivities at chinatown and the chinese-dominated suburbs of Box Hill and Doncaster will be held over the weekend.
On Sunday night, I'll be having dinner with SY, Jen-Son, his brother Kit-Son, and a few other people I don't know. I'm making "Emperor Chicken" (aka beggars' chicken) and we're gonna attempt to make our own "Yee Sang", improvising with whatever ingredients we can find. I think other things on the menu are roast duck, "siew yoke", "char siew" mixed veg, kangkung belacan, fried beehoon and for dessert, "hong tau sah". Sounds like a lot of food for 6 people, but hey, it's CNY... time to pig out isn't it?

ah... the CNY bit reminds me of my rootless existence in london when i had to find a public phone to call home just to wish my family gong xi gong xi... now that i am back in malaysia and, guess what? i couldn't wait to flee kota tinggi for KL last night, the second day of the CNY,leaving my parents reluctant eyes behind me...
well, that's life...
