Internet Explorer 7 beta 2

Chatter amongst the web design community is getting louder now with the recent release of Internet Explorer 7 beta 2. With much improved CSS support, there's been concerns that CSS hacks used to 'fix' IE 5/6 are no longer necessary, but might still be picked up by IE 7 and thus rendering the page incorrectly. The IE 7 developers have even made it a point... more »

An Eye for Annai

Jonathan Klassen and Daniel Rodrigues's animated short, An Eye for Annai, is a really sweet and cute story. It's all beautifully hand-drawn, accompanied with a simple but touching soundtrack of a solo recorder. Go watch it and shed a tear or two. Free MP3

Colin's got a new guitar and he's recording again. It's a new version of his melody which has gone by several names. "Alone", "Nevermore" which has vocals by his girlfriend Snow, and now "Wishing for Snow" which sounds much better quality and in a different key. Looking forward to the other tunes and the full demo 'tape' (like who uses tapes anymore?).... more »

Nude No More

Ok so I've just given in and ordered a t-shirt I've eyed for quite a while on Threadless. They have really awesome designs and the one I picked out is called "Emotional Trip", not that it represents my current state of mind or anything. I've wanted "Damn Scientists" ever since I've found that site some years back but they never seem to have it in... more »

Gmail invitations

I hardly know anyone who still doesn't have a Gmail account by now but if there's anybody who doesn't and wants one, send me an email and a short 50-word-or-less reason why you'd want one and I'll send you an invitation. I have 6 invitations to give out. For those who do have Gmail accounts already, here are some Gmail tips.... more »

The Most Beautiful Apple Hardware Icons

I came across this while browsing a magazine at the newsagents -- the Magnum Opus icon set at widget : widget for Mac OS X contains over 500 icons of every single piece of Apple hardware ever made, even prototypes like the "Knowledge Navigator", and does anybody remember Apple used to make the QuickTake series of digital cameras? Skype

A few people have been suggesting I download this peer-to-peer, free Internet Phone app called Skype for a while already, but I've only just recently installed it just to see what the fuss is all about. It was in beta for quite a while already but version 1.0 was just released on 27 July 2004. I've only tried it once and the quality is pretty... more »

Cow on a tree

This photo was taken quite a while back. New Years' Eve 2003 in fact. Siew Yee, Jen-son and I were wandering around town, and decided to pop over to the Melbourne Docklands to check it out. It's sights like this that remind me why I love living in Melbourne. The quirky arty-fartiness which just makes you wonder "What the...?" And you see it all... more »

Paper Discs

The technological advancements coming out of Japan never ceases to amaze me. This time, it's something a bit high-tech and low-tech at the same time... Paper-based optical discs. With 51% paper content, it allows "a high level of artistic label printing" as well as being easily destructible for sensitive information. The discs use 'blu-ray' technology which squeezes 25GB of data. So much for the paper-less... more »

Simply del.icio.us

I've seen the ingenious domain name del.icio.us mentioned a few times in other blogs and sites I read, but only this evening I actually took the time to check it out, after reading favourable reviews and praise about it. In their words: Delicious is a social bookmarks manager. Using simple bookmarklets, you can add bookmarks to your list and categorize them. I have registered (del.icio.us/jonathanpoh)and... more »

Aussie Rules

I just came back from my first ever Footy (aka Aussie-rules Football) game at Telstra Dome (I was spectating, not playing, DUH). It was a very interesting experience and it was good that I went with my colleague and his friends who explained what was going on and by the 2nd quarter I kinda got the hang of it. It was pretty confusing at first... more »

Brazilian Nights

A few days ago I watched Terry Gilliam's (of Monty Python fame and director of 12 Monkeys) 1985 movie 'Brazil'. The story reminds me of '1984', but not quite as dark and ominous. Set in a government-controlled, information-overloaded future, Sam Lowry works in huge government beaurocracy, called the Ministry of Information. The movie weaves in and out of the 'real world' and Lowry's dreams/fantasies of... more »

Review of X-Men 2

Well I watched it in the cinema this morning (yes, the 11:15am show). It's pretty good I must say. I don't follow the comic books, and I didn't even watch the first movie. The story was pretty so-so, predictable at times (the heroes always win). Effects were pretty fantastic without being too over-done. The Wolverine-Cyclops-Jean Grey relationship tension was quite well played out, I thought,... more »

Perfume Skincare for the rest of us]]>

On a lighter note, this is what I saw at MidValley Megamall today. I sure I wouldn't want to be caught dead wearing LAMER perfume. Of course I know it's supposed to be La Mer, as in 'The Sea', but hey.. at a quick glance, with their use of all caps and tight spacing between 'La' and 'Mer', I'm probably not the only who... more »

Are you still awake?

I just watched Waking Life for the second time and it is every bit as mind blowing as the first time I saw it. Somehow there seemed to be a lot of stuff I didn't remember, or maybe I just forgot. Almost famous

Yesterday my dad was featured in the newspaper. Not just a tiny column and a stamp sized photo mind you, but a full, 2-page center spread in a national daily (archived copy of the page).
