Minty stats
I purchased Shaun Inman's Mint stats application for jonathanpoh.com and I'm finding that it's heck a lot more useful than the other stats packages that come with most web hosts. One bit of information that Mint brought to light was how popular my Wallpapers section is, and I'm getting loads of visits to that section, mostly via Google's Image Search. I've gotten close to 1,500... more »
Newsletters
I've added a new section to the 'work' side of this site, and that's Newsletters. I've already sent one out in August to my clients as a trial, and the response has been good. I'm now opening it up to public so if you would like to be on this mailing list of mine, just go there and sign yourself up. It will be different... more »
RSS Feeds
I've just started using FeedBurner after many months of wondering what the hoopla is all about. I'm a bit of a stats junkie and, you guessed it, FeedBurner keeps track of my readership via the RSS feeds. AWStats on my server shows site traffic but there is no way I can tell how many people have subscribed to the RSS feeds. It also consolidates all... more »
Powered by MT 3.2
I've upgraded the back-end of this site to MovableType 3.2. Aside for a brief panic with my individual archives not appearing due to some error with the Smarty templating system -- which a re-upload of the PHP plugins folder seemed to have fixed -- the upgrade was relatively painless. As all good users should do, I backed up my blog and MySQL database before attempting... more »
Movable Type 3.2 Announced
Looks like MovableType 3.2 is finally out of beta with a long list of improvements and new features. I might give it a whirl once I get some time to install it here.... more »
Blog comments section updated
I've been tweaking this site a little bit, and have finally fixed the annoying problem with the TypePad logins for commenting. If you are still having trouble logging into your TypePad account, just let me know. I've also cleaned up the styling for comments, and incorporated Gravatars - Globally Recognized Avatars. If you already have one, it would automatically appear next to your comment posts.... more »
Mansfield and Mt Buller Photos
I've brought back my dad's Canon 10D digital SLR camera and the lenses he had on the last trip back to Ipoh. I had gone on a trip to Mansfield and Mount Buller in country Victoria, so this was as good an excuse as any to give the camera a go. Mansfield and Mt Buller photo set The views were spectacular, as was the wildlife... more »

MovableType 3.11
I've just upgraded MT on my site to version 3.11. One of the major features being commenter registration, which I have promptly enabled. That should reduce, if not totally eradicate blog comment spam on this site. This, though, would mean a minor inconvenience that you'd have to register a TypeKey account. This free registration will enable you to post comments on ANY MovableType-powered blog, including... more »
Google Ads
I've just signed up for Google's AdSense program to see if putting ads on my site is a viable way of earning a bit of extra to cover my expenses. Granted my site doesn't generate that much traffic, but still, maybe... I'll be trying out different positions and layouts trying to make it as unobtrusive as possible. I'll be testing it for 3 months to... more »
IE 5.0 compatible!
The updates to jonathanpoh.com are almost all done, with only a few bugs and kinks to work out before the new year. Today I installed Windows 98 within Virtual PC just so I could test out the site using IE 5.0 and guess what, it's not broken at all! I feared the worst, with IE 5 having all its quirks and oddities that people have... more »
Blogspam
Looks like I too got hit by the blog-comment spam that people have been reporting. It's pretty insidious too, cos it's posted in the comments of much older blog posts which I don't bother checking. It's only because I saw a rather unusual entry in the 'recent comments' box in MT which brought it to my attention. I have installed MT-Blacklist during the transition to... more »
MT-Textile and SmartyPants
I just installed two MovableType plugins and am testing it out now. MT-Textile allows me to type in simplified formatting like *this* or _this_ and it will automatically convert it to the appropriate HTML formatting like this and this Pretty nifty. SmartyPants works in conjunction with MT-Textile to automatically convert normal straight quotation marks \' and \" to "smart quotes" and other typographical niceties like... more »
Referrers
Just checking my logs for July and i've gotten a few interesting incoming links. International Atomic Energy Agency - huh? what do they want with me? The S-Spot - a blog. wonder if it's someone i know... Zone-H - looks like some system security consultancy, but why do they have a copy of my index and stored in a folder called 'defaced'? weird. And the... more »
Beta Test My Site
I've made some progress with the structural upgrade to this site, but it's not quite ready yet. If you're feeling adventurous you can check it out at http://www.jonathanpoh.info. I've only made some minor changes to the design and layout, and I think it looks even neater now. At least now there's some sort of logical grouping of the stuff on the right column. I took... more »
Reciprocated Link
A couple of weeks ago my site was linked from Zilmer.com. Coolness.. :-) Priidu has a nice site himself, utilizing a 4 column newspaper-like layout. His tagline for the site, "Published weekly, updated often".... more »
Hidden changes
Well I've been making changes to the site during the past few days, some minor, some major, some you probably wouldn't notice unless i told you. First of all, the archives for the blog, finally got all the kinks worked out (i think). The search box is no longer on the main page (betcha didn't even notice, heh!) but located within the archives listing. Changed... more »
Email troubles
I've been having trouble with my email address. It appears that my me(at)jonathanpoh(dot)com address is bouncing for some people, so far I've identified it being to mail to and from jaring.my and yahoo.co.uk addresses. Any others, i don't know yet, cos obviously those emails can't reach me to tell me so. In case you're one of those affected, you can try emailing me at my... more »
Traffic Jam
After I posted a news item on MacNN about the opening of the new AppleCenter, along with a link to my gallery hosting the pics i took, I started getting an insane number of click-throughs to that album. Some of those pictures got over 2000 hits the last i checked. Examining my server logs, I've used up 3/4 of my monthly bandwidth quota in just... more »
Some minor changes
Finally got round to fixing up my site a bit. I've now put my blog archives accessible to all, just click on the link on the column to the right. The posting date/time below every post (such as this one) is now a permanant link to that post in the archive. Did anyone notice the new link colours? like it or not?... more »
Blog migration complete
ah... finally transferred all my posts from Blogger to MT. I had already installed MT on my server prior to this for my brother for use on his site, colinpoh.com, so it was not a really big deal. I just followed the instructions on exporting my existing blog into a format readable by MT and imported it in.. easy.... more »
Alive again!
wow... it's been some time since my last posting. Christmas is just around the corner and I've heard of some problems with blogger lately so i'm considering moving this blog onto Movable Type soon. Will keep u updated on the progress of that. Meanwhile if you're a current or ex-EDM student, please check out the EDMers Forum and the discussion on revamping the main site.... more »
More wallpaper for your desktop
"but Jon, there's more than 9 wallpapers in that section..." before you accuse me of being 'numerically-challenged', i have been adding more wallpaper to the downloads section over time, and as it stands there are 17 now. Send me some email if you like them (or not).... more »
Download some Wallpaper
