Internet Explorer 7 beta 2
Chatter amongst the web design community is getting louder now with the recent release of Internet Explorer 7 beta 2. With much improved CSS support, there's been concerns that CSS hacks used to 'fix' IE 5/6 are no longer necessary, but might still be picked up by IE 7 and thus rendering the page incorrectly. The IE 7 developers have even made it a point... more »
Minimalist Websites
A while ago I posted a link to a page with a list of websites with minimalist design. However, many pf the sites on that page are now defunct or have redesigned and are not quite as minimal as they used to be. In any case, here my own list of current favourite sites:... more »
Getting Real
I've been reading reviews and kudos about 37signals' book, Getting Real, and so I bought and downloaded the PDF book yesterday. After spending a good half hour wrestling with my laser printer trying to figure out how to feed the paper properly to print in duplex as it doesn't have an automatic duplexing unit, I got the whole 171-page book printed out. Much as I... more »
Warning signs that a project isn't worth taking up
Andy Budd has nailed it on the head in his post, 10 Bad Project Warning Signs . I've seen a few of those in my time (and in my naivety, took up the projects still). The best line to say to the clients still is "Price, Speed, Quality. Pick any two" which is also mentioned in the comments somewhere. Update: Another somewhat related article has... more »

Why I Hate Flash
OK, I've gotten too many requests as to why I dislike Flash as much as I do, so I'm going to put it on record now. When Macromedia Flash 1.0 appeared on the market in 1996, it was heralded as a ingenious format for putting up rich graphics to the web which was dogged by slow modems and huge GIF and JPEG graphics. Flash was... more »
Minimalist websites!
Wow, I've hit the mother-lode of links to clean, simple, usable web sites at the Minimalist Web Project. I've actually seen some of the sites listed there before, but it probably amounts to less than 5% of what's in that directory. That's gonna be keeping me busy clicking for quite some time. UPDATE 20 Apr 2006: the URL for the above page had changed. Link... more »
Background Tiles Back in Fashion?
Page Scrolling goodness!
Whoopee! Today I stumbled upon something I've been looking for for a long time. (Hmmm.. double 'for's..) A javascript that scrolls the window to the anchor when you click on a link, rather than jumping suddenly to that point in the page. I've wanted to do that on my résumé page for a Very Long Time. I had done extensive searches on google previously and... more »
Collapsible menus and HTML Validation
Well.. no luck in finding that page I was looking for, but I did find a really nice script which would do exactly what I'm looking for, and it's small and cross-browser compatible too (degrading elegantly for older browsers). On a side note, this web site of mine does not validate to w3c standards. No, not even HTML 4.01 Transitional which is quite lax. :(... more »
Searching...
I've been spending the past few days scouring my browser history for this elusive page I saw. For the life of me I cannot remember the title or the author of the blog in question, but what caught my eye was the simplistic layout, and especially the fact that it had a slick "hide/show" button for each box of secondary content on the side-bar. One... more »
